GTS supported the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) aspects of a corridor development project for Dirab Road, a major arterial in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This effort began with a Concept of Operations (ConOps) identifying the technologies that can be used on Dirab Road to ease congestion, reduce the probability of crashes, and keep drivers informed of delays, incidents, or anything else they should be aware of. Building upon best practices in ITS and existing network capabilities, the proposed tools include traffic detectors, automatic incident detection, closed circuit television cameras including pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras, dynamic message signs, lane and speed control signs, license plate recognition cameras, over-height detection systems, and road weather information systems. Multimodal considerations were also included, such as the interface of ITS with public transportation and micro-mobility services. When integrated into a larger ITS architecture, these tools can make roads more efficient, safer, and smarter.

GTS also created a conceptual design for the ITS elements of this road corridor. This included a schematic ITS telecommunication network, showing the routing of fiber optic lines connecting to the locations of specific ITS devices such as CCTV cameras, automatic detectors, and other equipment. This conceptual design was later refined into a final design, integrating feedback from the client and providing finer-grained details on conduit size, splice vaults, and related items.

At GTS, we believe technology can be leveraged for the greater good, improving roads to save time, save space, and save lives. This project, once implemented, will transform Dirab Road into a smart corridor that will form part of a citywide ITS-enhanced transportation network.
