HOME / PROJECTS > INTERNATIONAL > Corridor Development for Al Nahda Road

GTS has supported the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) elements of several corridor development projects in Saudi Arabia. For the Comprehensive Corridor Development Plan for Al Nahdha Road in Riyadh, we prepared a Concept of Operations (ConOps) that identified the technologies that could be used on this major transportation corridor to smooth traffic flow, reduce collision potential, ease congestion, and keep road users informed of incidents. Building upon best practices in ITS and existing network capabilities, the proposed tools include traffic detectors, automatic incident detection, closed circuit television cameras, dynamic message signs, and lane control signs, among others. Multimodal considerations were also included, such as the interface of ITS with public transportation and micro-mobility services. Together, these features can help to transform a potentially congested roadway corridor into a smart, highly efficient transportation facility.

The ConOps was followed by the development of a conceptual design and a final design. During the design phase, GTS created a schematic ITS telecommunication network which shows specific locations throughout the corridor for CCTV cameras, dynamic message signs, traffic detectors, and other ITS equipment, as well as fiber optic lines.

Technology offers enormous potential for improvements in the realm of transportation, and Al Nahdha Road is no exception. With the integration of new, smart technologies into existing roadway networks, we can create safer and more efficient streets for all.
