HOME / PROJECTS > INTERNATIONAL > Corridor Development for Prince Turki Road, ITS Design, Riyadh

GTS supported the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) components of the Prince Turki Road project in Saudi Arabia, a major initiative covering a total of 73 km of branched roadways divided into four implementation packages. As one of the largest ITS deployments of its kind, the project focuses on enhancing safety, mobility, and operational performance across a complex and expanding urban network.

GTS prepared a comprehensive Concept of Operations (ConOps) that defined how smart technologies can improve traffic flow, reduce collision potential, manage congestion, and ensure that road users receive timely and accurate information. The proposed ITS infrastructure incorporates a wide range of systems, including traffic detectors, automatic incident detection technologies, dynamic message signs, lane and speed control signs, pan-tilt-zoom CCTV cameras, license plate recognition cameras, over-height detection systems, and road weather information systems. These technologies were selected based on the best international practices and tailored to the operational needs and characteristics of the Prince Turki roadway system.

Following the ConOps, GTS developed the conceptual and final ITS designs, which included detailed telecommunications network schematics showing the distribution of ITS field devices across all roadway branches, as well as the fiber-optic backbone required for system integration, communication, and long-term reliability. GTS also delivered a complete detailed design package consisting of technical specifications, bills of quantities (BOQ), and comprehensive design reports supporting procurement, construction, and implementation.
Through the integration of advanced and interconnected ITS technologies, the Prince Turki Road network is being transformed into a safer, smarter, and more efficient transportation system that supports the region’s growing mobility needs and long-term development vision.
