GTS prepared a corridor plan for West Tefft Street adjacent to Dana Elementary School in the unincorporated community of Nipomo. The project focused on improving safety and operations near the school through an evaluation of an existing mid-block RRFB crossing, a proposed drop-off and pick-up traffic pattern, and a driveway closure.
GTS conducted an operational analysis under multiple scenarios, including existing conditions, existing conditions with the proposed traffic pattern, and 20-year future conditions with and without the project. The team performed site visits during school peak periods to observe traffic behavior, interactions with crossing guards, and the effectiveness of existing signs and striping.
The study also included a three-year collision analysis and an evaluation of intersection suitability for RRFB placement based on current guidance and best practices. The final corridor concept provided recommended striping and operational changes to improve student safety and traffic flow around the school.
