GTS performed an ICE (Intersection Control Evaluation) followed by an ISOAP (Intersection Safety and Operational Assessment Process) at the US-101 interchange with South Higuera Street and Clover Ridge Lane. The study supported the Bob Jones Bike Trail Extension project, coordinated with Caltrans, to close the northbound slip lane and convert it into a Class I bicycle path. This change required modifications to vehicle turning movements, including those of STAA trucks, and updates to the intersection configuration.
GTS conducted a comprehensive evaluation that included a field review of existing conditions, a three-year collision analysis within a 2,000-foot radius, and operational modeling using Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) methodologies. The team analyzed existing and future (20-year) conditions, both with and without the project, and evaluated the feasibility of multi-way STOP control.
The study also included swept-path analysis to confirm appropriate curb radii and intersection geometry for large vehicles, along with planning-level concept designs presenting two alternative configurations.
